Elon Musk’s XAI may soon make another move to compete with OpenAI: launch a standalone app for the Grok chatbot.
Musk created xAI as an alternative to OpenAI, a company he helped found, but later distanced himself from excessive ideological differences. Now, Wall Street Journal reportsxAI plans to release an app as early as December that will be able to work with OpenAI’s ChatGPT as it scales up.
Currently, users can access Grok through X, but only if they subscribe to the service. Citing anonymous sources, Journal reports that xAI is also behind customer service features for Starlink, part of Musk’s other company, SpaceX. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude already have their own apps and free products, which makes Grok stand out from other chatbots.
