CES is full of AI companions and robotic assistants this year, but Loona’s DeskMate is a shrewd take on the idea: It’s a desktop charging hub with three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and a MagSafe pad that automatically activates the AI companion app when you connect your iPhone to a wireless charger.
What’s unique about DeskMate is that by using your phone, it takes advantage of the technology you already have. It doesn’t need its own display, camera or microphone because the iPhone (and it’s only the iPhone for now) provides them. By also providing charging, it can replace a charger that is already on your desk instead of making a mess.
The base swivels and tilts so DeskMate keeps looking at you when you talk to it. It has cute Pixar eyes, but still has practical features like Slack integration and meeting lend a hand.
DeskMate is expected to launch in March via a crowdfunding campaign, but I’m hesitant due to the price. There’s no final figure yet, but the company told me it will be “under $300,” which is a lot for a device that’s already on your phone.
