The Beatles were nominated for two Grammy Awards – almost 50 years after the band formed We have officially broken up. Their latest song, titled “Now and Then,” was recreated last year using artificial intelligence and has now been named record of the year alongside the likes of Beyoncé, Charlie XCX, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. He was also nominated for best rock performance, competing against Green Day, Pearl Jam and The Black Keys.
However, “Now and Then” was never released because the technology at the time did not allow John’s vocals to be separated from the piano to achieve a spotless sound. However, in 2021, filmmaker Peter Jackson and his sound team were able to separate the instrumental and vocal parts using machine learning technology, which allowed Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to finally complete the song.
Even though Now and Then has ended its employ of machine learning, it is still within limits Grammy Awards Policy on Artificial Intelligence. Currently, the guidelines state that “only human creators may be considered for, nominated for, or won a GRAMMY Award,” but works containing “elements” of AI material “are eligible in the applicable categories.”
It’s a little strange to see “Now and Then” competing with contemporary music like Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” but it’s been a long time coming. We’ll find out how the Beatles will fare during the 2025 Grammy Awards, which will take place on Sunday, February 2.
