The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have reportedly agreed to share responsibilities for investigating potential antitrust violations by Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia, New York Times reported.
The Justice Department will lead investigations into Nvidia, while the FTC will look into the deal between OpenAI and its largest investor, Microsoft.
In January this year, the FTC began investigating potential antitrust issues related to technology companies’ investments in smaller artificial intelligence companies. The agency sent letters to Alphabet, Amazon, Anthropic, Microsoft and OpenAI. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, and Amazon are investors in Anthropic.
Edge contacted OpenAI, Microsoft and Nvidia but received no response. The FTC declined to comment.
The investigation by both agencies does not mean the Biden administration is pursuing cases against the three companies, but… Times he noted that a similar deal in 2019 led to the government filing cases against Google, Apple, Amazon and Meta.
