The end of the Sony era in TVs

Share

Few technology companies can boast of Sony’s impact on our lives. From Walkman to PlayStation to Trinitron, Sony has been producing excellent gadgets in many categories for decades, which makes this week’s news a little depressed. Sony’s novel joint venture with TCL doesn’t spell the end of Sony TVs — and maybe that’s even good news — but it certainly does mark the end of an era.

ON this episode VergecastNilay and David talk about Sony’s deal with TCL, Sony’s legacy in the TV industry and what it all could mean for anyone buying a novel TV. The deal isn’t done yet and we don’t know All that’s all there is to it, but it’s already quite clear what will come out of it for both sides.

The hosts then move on to their weekly AI news, which seems to focus on one question: How is anyone supposed to make money from all this technology? OpenAI clearly thinks advertising is the answer, because of course it is, because that’s what everyone else thinks. Apple apparently thinks hardware is the solution, for the same reasons. The hardware discussion brings us to a bigger question about AI gadgets: what Is best form factor for artificial intelligence? We don’t know. Perhaps the answer is none of them. But we still evaluate some ideas.
