The Center for Investigative Journalism is suing OpenAI and Microsoft

Center for Investigative Journalism (CIR), a nonprofit producing organization Mother Jones AND Disclose, announced on Thursday that it is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement, following similar actions Recent York Times and many other media.

“OpenAI and Microsoft began dusting off our stories to make their product more efficient, but they never asked for permission or offered compensation, unlike other organizations that license our material,” Monika Bauerlein, CEO of the Center for Investigative Reporting, said in a statement. “This free-riding behavior is not only unfair, it’s a copyright infringement. The work of journalists, at CIR and everywhere else, is valuable, and OpenAI and Microsoft know it.”

CIR lawyers argue lawsuit that OpenAI and Microsoft copied its content, damaged its relationships with readers and partners, and deprived it of revenue.

“We work with the news industry and partner with global news publishers to display their content in our products like ChatGPT, including summaries, quotes, and attributions to drive traffic back to the original articles,” an OpenAI spokesperson said. he told CNBC about the CIR lawsuit.

OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Edge.
