Ann Altman has filed a lawsuit against her brother, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, alleging sexual abuse throughout her childhood for almost decade.
The rest of the Altman family immediately backed down lawsuitclaiming that the allegations are “completely untrue” and stem from “mental health challenges” that Ann has been struggling with for years.
“Annie has made deeply hurtful and completely untrue statements about our family, and especially Sam,” Sam, his mother and two brothers wrote in a statement released by Sam on X.
Ann’s lawsuit alleged that Sam abused her from 1997 to 2006, starting when Ann was three and Sam was 12, until Sam reached adulthood. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Missouri, says Ann suffered “severe emotional distress” and was unable to lead a “normal life” as a result of Sam’s alleged abuse.
Ann’s attorney described the Altman family’s statement as an attempt to “distract attention from the harm they have caused.” Attorney Ryan J. Mahoney said sexual abuse can cause “mental health effects such as persistent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety.” He also said of Ann that there was “no evidence that her own mental health contributed to her allegations.”
In a statement, the Altman family maintains that Ann has made conspiratorial claims against various family members over the years, demanding money from them. Family members say they have offered her financial support and asked her for medical assist, but she “refuses conventional treatment.”
“This situation causes great pain for our entire family,” the family said in a statement. The family says it has “chosen not to publicly respond” to instances when Ann has made similar claims in the past, but “believes we have no choice but to address it” now that she has filed the lawsuit.
