In 2024, Athenahealth Environmental notes were introduced to generate clinical documentation by integration of listening to the environment and generative AI directly with the flow of clinical work athenaeon.
Chad Dodd, Vice President for product management in Athenahealth, sat down with on 2025 Himss Global Health Conference and exhibition To discuss products that support AI and the way it distinguishes itself from its competitors.
Mobihealthnews: Can you tell me about your AI products?
Chad Dodd: In Athenahealth from eight to 10 years we had solutions related to technology using artificial intelligence. So artificial intelligence is not modern in Athena, and many of our systems are automated and provide effective work flows enabled by artificial intelligence. Recently, we have released our solution at the Ambient Note, which is probably the most thinking AI solution that exists in Athena and I should say in the healthcare ecosystem.
With one click of the patient’s supplier, he can conduct a discussion and dialog box, and then we accept this dialog box, summarize it in the notes project and put this note directly into the doctor’s chart and on behalf of. So it really changes and changes the way this doctor is involved with the patient, but removes the weight of the documentation element and places it all on the chart, simply and easily for this doctor and this care team. So he really transforms their experience, removes documentation hours, makes it simpler, makes it a more precise note and actually improves the overall page of coding and settlements.
MHN: There are other companies offering similar products, such as Commure, which bought Augmenix last year. What is the difference between what they do and Athena?
Dodd: A few things we do when everything is built into Athena’s experience. So a doctor who knows the Athena interface and experience, everything is imprisoned there.
And the second is, it is a knot. He goes directly to the flow of Athena’s work. So, with one click, it is automatically in Athena chart, so you can view it and then sign it, and then a closed meter on the same day.
Another experience we do is a bit unique Athena, we provide access to different models, different sets of AI solutions, all in Athena with the same user experience. We know that one doctor documents differently than another doctor, so we want to be able to adapt this experience especially for the clinician himself. Therefore, we work with three different suppliers, whom we then enable Atheny’s experience to ensure the optionality to both positions and suppliers.
MHN: What are you doing here in Himss and how is the conference going to you?
Dodd: Himss was great. Himss was great. It is great to make contact with IT experts, clients and partners who really combine the healthcare ecosystem to talk about some challenges that it has, but also to raise, present modern solutions that will lend a hand our patients and our suppliers.
