Many Procreate users can breathe a sigh of relief, as the popular iPad illustration app has taken a firm stance against generative AI. ‘We will not be implementing any generative AI into our products,’ Procreate CEO says James Cuda said in a video posted on X“I don’t like what’s happening to the industry and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists.”
“Generative AI is stripping the humanity out of things. Built on a foundation of theft, technology is driving us toward a futile future,” Procreate said at new AI section on website“We think machine learning is a fascinating technology with many benefits, but the path that generative AI is taking is the wrong one for us.”
Procreate has been incredibly well-received by comparison. The company stuck with a one-time $12.99 purchase model rather than moving to an ongoing subscription like Adobe and Clip Studio Paint did, and it expanded its offerings to include products for animation and (eventually) desktop users. Making such a firm commitment against the introduction of generative AI is likely the cherry on the cake for creators who feel like the alternative options are dwindling.
Cuda said: “We don’t know exactly where this story will go or how it will end, but we believe we are on the right track to supporting human creativity.”
