OpenAI is widespread implementing group chats inside ChatGPT, so you can invite up to 20 other people to talk to your AI chatbot. The feature is now available globally to all logged in users short pilot earlier this month.
OpenAI is positioning this feature as a way to collaborate with friends, family members, or colleagues on activities such as organizing dinner parties, creating travel plans, and sketching an outline – all using ChatGPT on board.
You create a group chat by selecting the “people” icon in the upper right corner of the ChatGPT application. ChatGPT will then copy your existing chat into a recent group chat, where you can add other people by sending them a link to your conversation (which they can also share). ChatGPT will ask you to enter your name, username and photo when you first log in or create a group chat, making it easier to see who’s talking.
OpenAI says it has trained ChatGPT to adapt to the “flow of the conversation,” which means it will try to determine the best time to chime in and when to stay hushed. If you want to get a response from the chatbot, you can directly mention “ChatGPT” in the message. ChatGPT can also react to messages with emojis and reference profile photos, e.g. by creating personalized images.
You can access various settings by selecting the group chat icon in the top right corner of the screen, which includes options to add or remove people, mute notifications, and provide custom ChatGPT instructions. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT will not employ memories from your personal chats in group chats, nor will it create recent memories based on your group chats.
ChatGPT uses GPT-5.1 Auto to power its responses in group chats, “which selects the best model to respond to based on the prompt and models available to the user ChatGPT responds to.” Rate limits will only apply when ChatGPT sends a chat message.
