OpenAI has launched a novel ChatGPT feature that makes it easier to find workspace information without having to switch between applications. The ChatGPT “company knowledge” update for business, enterprise and education users is powered by the GPT-5 version, which connects directly to tools like Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive and GitHub, allowing the chatbot to browse more sources to find the answers it needs.
The goal is to enable business users to utilize ChatGPT as a kind of conversational search engine that can search through all available data in the workplace to find what they need. Earlier this month, Anthropic launched a similar “Skills” tool for its own Claude AI, which aims to improve an AI agent’s capabilities for specific job tasks.
It’s based beta features introduced in June and provides a more comprehensive experience than previous app connections for ChatGPT. OpenAI says the company’s GPT-5-based knowledge update has been specially trained to simultaneously search multiple sources to provide more comprehensive and true answers.
“Each response includes clear citations so you can see where the information comes from and trust the results,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “For example, if you have an upcoming call with a customer, ChatGPT can prepare a briefing for you based on recent messages from your Slack account channel, key details from emails with the customer, notes from the last call in Google Docs, and any escalations related to Intercom support tickets since the last meeting.”
OpenAI says its company knowledge feature handles ambiguous questions such as “where have we achieved the company’s goals for next year?” by repeatedly searching for different sources and viewpoints to resolve conflicting details. The tool uses date filters and, according to OpenAI, can “think while searching,” allowing it to find time-based information.
Company Knowledge must be manually selected when starting novel conversations, and ChatGPT cannot crawl the Internet or create charts and images while the feature is enabled. OpenAI says ChatGPT can still answer questions through connected apps without activating company knowledge, but “the answers won’t contain as in-depth or detailed quotes.” Updates in the coming months are expected to expand the company’s expertise to other ChatGPT capabilities.
