The meta will now enable U.S. government agencies and contractors to utilize the open-source Llama AI model for “national security applications.” IN announcement on Mondaythe company said it is working with Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Oracle and other companies to make Llama available to the government.
Under Meta’s “Acceptable Use Policy.” people cannot utilize the latest Lamy 3 model for “military, warfare, industrial or nuclear applications, espionage.” However, as Meta explained, this update opens the door for the U.S. military to utilize Lama for purposes such as “streamlining complex logistics and planning, tracking terrorist financing, or strengthening our cyber defenses.”
Meta says Oracle has already started using Llama to “synthesize” maintenance documents to support aircraft technicians make repairs, while Lockheed Martin uses the model to generate code and analyze data. While announcing its third-quarter results, the company suggested sharing its artificial intelligence model with the government.
Last week report from Reuters revealed that Chinese researchers used Meta’s Lamy 2 model to build an artificial intelligence system for the country’s army. As Meta’s spokesman said at the time Reuters that “the alleged role of a single and outdated version of the US open source model is irrelevant when we know that China is already investing over a trillion dollars to surpass the US in artificial intelligence.”
In its post, Meta described the importance for the United States to stay ahead of the AI race, stating that “it is in the interest of both America and the broader democratic world that U.S. open source models stand out and succeed compared to models from China and elsewhere countries”. Other AI companies also work with the military, with report from Interception revealing that US Africa Command has purchased cloud computing services from Microsoft, offering access to OpenAI tools. Google DeepMind also has a cloud computing agreement with the Israeli government.
