Michael Calore: Pretty.
Lauren Goode: Yes. So I recommend it Technique.
Michael Calore: Pretty. Both using technology and painting a shadowy future just like this show.
Lauren Goode: I think this could be our modern slogan. I like this. Let’s practice this. Mike, what’s your recommendation?
Michael Calore: I also recommend the book. This is a completely modern book. It’s named Neu Klang: The Definitive Krautrock History by Cristoph Dallach. Krautrock, terrible name, terrible name, but over the years it has evolved into a term of affection for the music made by German bands from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, maybe later, but I’d say that’s generous.
Bands like Can, I’m never sure how to pronounce it, but CAN, Can, Kraftwerk, Faust, Neu!, bands you’ve probably heard of if you like weird rock. Either way, it’s one of my favorite styles of music, and this is an oral history of this style of music. So the author talked to all the living players, people who were involved in this world, people like Iggy Pop and Brian Eno, and really presented it in a grand tone. This is the first major, definitive oral history of the Krautrock movement.
So if you’re interested, the English language version is now available in the UK. So I ordered it from Abrasive Trade and it was a little early, but if you’d rather wait for the US version, it’ll be out in early August. So it’s coming out this summer. So if you’re a huge fan, you can quickly get your grubby little hands on it and ship it overseas, or if you’re American and just want to wait and be indolent, you can wait.
Lauren Goode: Are your hands soiled from Kraut?
Michael Calore: From sauerkraut?
Lauren Goode: Yes, sauerkraut.
Michael Calore: No, it’s just the ink on all the books I read.
Lauren Goode: Sweet.
Michael Calore: Yes.
Lauren Goode: I appreciate you.
Michael Calore: Thanks. Okay, thank you all. It was a stunning discussion. Thank you both for joining us this week.
Reece Rogers: Thank you.
Kate Knibbs: Thank you for your hospitality.
Lauren Goode: Yep, standard podcast response. Love it.
Kate Knibbs: Should I start being rude?
Lauren Goode: No, it was great.
Kate Knibbs: Yes. Actually, fuck you. I don’t know if I’m allowed to swear.
Lauren Goode: It will remain.
Kate Knibbs: Kidding.
Lauren Goode: Yes you are.
Kate Knibbs: APPROX.
Michael Calore: Thank you all for listening. If you have comments, you can find us all in AI Reviews. Just search our names on Google. Our producer is the mighty Boone Ashworth. We’ll be back next week with a modern show. Apple’s WWDC is next week, so come and hear us talk all things Apple. For now, goodbye.
