Meta has struck deals with popular actors to lend their voices to the Meta AI chatbot, and Kristen Bell was one of the first to lend her voice. Bell lending her voice is something of a surprise. In June, she openly expressed her opposition to having her data used by Meta’s AI.

She reposted a popular message on Instagram in which she stated that she did not consent to Meta using her content and image to train huge language models and demanded that Instagram “get rid of the AI program.”

The message claims that by reposting, users are refusing to allow Meta to operate their personal information for these purposes. Celebrities like Jessica Chastain, Sarah Paulson, and Ashley Tisdale a newer version of this prompt has been republished — however, re-publishing does not unsubscribe you.

The concern is fueled by a June update to Meta’s terms of service that allows the company to operate online posts, images, and tracking data to train its Llama 3 AI model. You can opt out through a series of settings, but not via an Instagram post.

The role of AI in original industries has sparked intense debate, with the entertainment union SAG-AFTRA fighting to ensure its members are not replaced by AI without consent and working with the state of California to pass AI laws that would restrict AI actor clones. But artists and actors aren’t necessarily opposed to the technology itself — they just want to be paid fairly. In the case of Meta, Wall Street Journal informs that the actors were paid millions for their contributions to the game.

Meta and Bell representatives did not respond to Edgerequests for comment.
