Apple will enable recording and transcribing of phone calls in iOS 18. The company announced the feature at Monday’s Worldwide Developers Conference and says it will automatically notify call participants that they are being recorded.
The image shared by Apple shows a recent recording option in the Phone app that displays a sound wave along with the recording time. It then transcribes your conversation in Notes, where you can generate a summary using Apple’s recent Intelligence AI system. You can also record and transcribe audio from within the Notes app.
As noted in a footnote on Apple iOS 18 preview page, audio transcription will only be available in English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese and Portuguese. At the very least, introducing audio recording to the Phone app should make it easier for journalists and other users to record and transcribe conversations, all while notifying the recipient.
Apple Intelligence played a starring role at WWDC, but there are plenty of other frosty features coming to iOS 18, including a customizable home page, Control Center changes, Tapback response improvements, and more.
