Apple announced the release of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, adding many novel Apple Intelligence features, including Image Playground, Genmoji, and ChatGPT integration. According to Apple press releaseupdates are already available, but we don’t see them on our devices (non-beta) yet. If you get an update, let us know in the comments.
With Image Playground, users can generate an image based on a prompt or create something based on one of Apple’s suggestions. However, Image Playground appears to choose cartoonish or stylistic images over photorealistic images, which could prevent potential misuse. Image Playground is available as a standalone app, integrated with Messages, Freeform and Keynote.
Genmoji allows users to generate their own emoji images (Emojipedia calls them “emoji-like stickers”), which I think could be a gigantic hit in group chats. The Notes app also includes an ‘Image Wand’ tool that transforms coarse drawings into more detailed images, with ready-made animation, illustration and sketch styles available.
The ChatGPT integration, which was one of the most notable Apple Intelligence features in the works, allows you to access the OpenAI tool from Siri or when using Apple’s writing tools. Features include a text builder that generates text based on what the user is already writing about, and ChatGPT’s text-to-image generation for inserting images directly into your document. You don’t need to have a ChatGPT account to employ it, but you can log in to your account if you want.
Other novel features in iOS 18.2 include visual intelligence, the ability to share AirTag locations with a link, daily Sudoku puzzles in Apple News Plus, and more. Localized English support has also been expanded to Australia, Canada, Ireland, Up-to-date Zealand, South Africa and the UK, supporting additional languages such as Chinese, French, Portuguese and Spanish. According to Apple, the expanded language support will be available throughout 2025, with the initial set rolling out in April, around the same time that Apple Intelligence features are expected to launch in the EU.
Update, December 11: We’ve noticed that we’re not seeing updates available on our devices yet.
