Filmmer last year Paul Schrader – director Blue collar, American GigooloAND First reformedand writer Martin Scorsese’s Taxi driver—I was added to something that seemed to be the last word about artificial intelligence in Hollywood film filming. A few days after the hit of science fiction Denisa Villeneuve Dune: part twoSchrader asked his observers on Facebook: “Will Dune 3 be made by AI? And if so, how will we know? “
Schrader is well considered not only as a director, but one of the top shelf of Curmudgeons, a quick with throwing burn or bait. But his Dune The tweet seemed more than a different provocation. It talked to the growing feelings among many filmmakers, including: that Hollywood leaned, creating elegant, antiseptic images so devoid of personality that they might as well be created by life, breathing, thinking, a sense of the artist, but by a computer.
The most generative “training” AIS on existing change of artificial images. WITH DuneThe opposite seemed true. It seemed that Villeneuve trained on AI, screens and shiny taps for desktop computers. (In fact, the film used “machine learning” models for relatively modest goals.) Still, it made me think: is there a real aesthetics of AI? Do video generators powered by AI divide a set of artistic ideas or values common among their results? Or, even more in principle, Power AI video generators have ideas or values at all?
My initial premonitions were here … a) no; b) no; IC); No, of course, artificial intelligence could not have “ideas” or “values”, which are the sole province of human artists and more generally people. The toaster does not know to heated up bread or a fairy tale, and then follows him. It is not either care About how he does it. It simply makes a set of routine, mechanized functions related to insulation (and final rejection) of bread, rolls and other toast. Why should the generative AI be different?
To test these rooms (and my rather disregarding conclusions) I went to the theater in Recent York to take part in the 10 tiny films program from the 2025 AI film festival.
AI movie The festival is supported by Runway, the Recent York company AI, offering “tools for human imagination”. These tools include image and video generators, enabling users to create characters, sets, lighting schemes and all addictive scene. Thanks to Gen-4 software, users can theoretically create the whole movie-Lub, anyway something approximate.
“We were all frustrated filmmakers,” says co -founder of Runway, Alejandro Matamala Ortiz from He and his partners, who met as students, students enrolled in an interactive telecommunications program (etc.) in Nyu Tisch School for The Arts. “We wanted to build the tools we wanted to use.”
The Film Festival was born from further willingness to support legitimize the same AI tools. In the gala shows this summer took place at the prestigious Alice Tully Hall in Recent York in Lincoln Center (a house for the Recent York Film Festival and year -round programming) that filmmakers and technologists are gathering to watch Crème de la Crème from technology usually saved to produce a “slope”. The festival format, says ORTIZ, serves to “connect people”. Now the same gala program is giving concerts in IMAX cinemas throughout the country to limit their commitment.
