How Wellspan Health innovatively uses a virtual nurse from AI-Schedule

Wellspan Health is still at the forefront of transforming healthcare in Central Pennsylvania, with particular emphasis on innovation and transformation of care to provide our patients with greater availability and affordability.

Our approach focuses on internal and external initiatives to ensure that we properly meet the needs of our patients. In 2025, innovations often include a form of artificial intelligence.

Our team of innovation, which includes a research and design team and a digital health team, deals with the management of consumer digital ecosystems and the utilize of novel technologies in areas that benefit our organization and our patients.

One of our latest implementations of artificial intelligence in Wellspa is to launch virtual monitoring of patients and nursing to boost patients ‘safety and relieve nurses’ loads, allowing you to focus on caring for patients by the bed.

At Wellspa, the safety and well -being of our patients is the highest priority, and we are involved in finding a better way to serve them, members of our team and our community.

The platform, powered by artificial intelligence, provides virtual care, improvement in quality and coordination of care. The pilot of the platform in 2023 at the Wellspa Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital in York, Pennsylvania helped us.

The results were impressive, and the data that support our work still support the effort. Until now, in the hospital that we saw:

  • 76.1% Reduction during care hours
  • Reduction 31.9% in the case of the patient’s falls from absence
  • 13.5% improvement of the result of the nursing category for the experience of patients
  • 16.5% improvement

In addition to these statistics, we won the team members because they saw the benefits of first -hand. Over half of the team members, 55%, believe that the platform increases the flexibility in the workplace and positively contributes to its own health and well -being. The larger majority, 86%, believe that the platform improves patient safety and quality of care on the individual. The support of our front line is extremely critical for the success of this or initiative.

Based on the pilot’s findings, the tool was introduced to almost every Wellspa hospital, currently covering tasks, such as discharge instructions and the duties of a guardian.

With over 700 cameras using AI based sensors, computer vision, monitoring of life signs and other, our patients may be sure that in addition to the team on the spot, virtual care expert is available to ensure and coordinate the immediate reaction of care. The virtual nurse platform is currently on average over 800 hours per month in performing clinical tasks.

In general, 31% of our parties at the system level are helped by a virtual nurse, and some of our hospitals exceed 50%. We know the same that the screenshots also take a lot of administrative time and we worked tough for our virtual nurses to improve this flow.

When it comes to monitoring patients or “carers”, as a system, we averaged almost 50 virtual patients’ observations per day, using groundbreaking technology that monitors patient movements to prevent injury before their occurrence. It is a virtual set of eyes that uses artificial intelligence to work smarter, and ultimately helps patients stabilize earlier so that they can leave the hospital and continue their way to recovery.

Most of these virtual nursing efforts are made of a centralized center for the system, enabling team members in some cases to work at home. This provides a pliant work environment of some members of our team, which increases the benefits of the workforce that our nurses at the bed achieve, reducing their administrative burden.

But we don’t stop at it. The evolution from the virtual nursing platform to the possibilities of nursing is what really excites us. Wellspan looks at various ways in which AI can benefit other departments and services throughout the system. Teams meet regularly to examine these options and discuss potential pilots who can utilize artificial intelligence to facilitate our daily duties.

We also believe that there are additional clinical obligations that can utilize the virtual platform. We discovered that at the very party there are 135 items documented between the nurse and the patient. If we manage to automate some of them by activating the voice with artificial intelligence, imagine time and effort that it would save.

Listening to the environment is an opportunity to extend the range of AI tools, such as craft, to find additional opportunities to improve and improve surgery. This is one of the many novel directions that we study with our partner in introducing this technology.
