How to exploit the latest AI video editing tools in Google Photos

Google Photos regularly receives modern and improved features, and one of the latest Android updates focuses on video editing. Even if you don’t have the latest Pixel 9 phone (which is required if you want to try out the strange modern Reimagine tool), you can now speed up, ponderous down and enhance your clips with just a few clicks, and trim them more easily.

What can you expect? Google is calling “AI-powered video presets” in the Android and iOS versions of Google Photos. Once the app’s algorithm analyzes your clips, you’ll be presented with a selection of effects – trim, zoom and ponderous down – that you can apply with a single tap. The app takes on the role of director and chooses where and how to apply these tweaks.

Once the changes arrive on your phone, you’ll also notice that the interface is a bit cleaner, with larger icons and larger text, making it easier to see what you’re doing. The idea is that it’s easier than ever to quickly make a few changes before sharing your clips, without having to open a separate editor on your phone or computer.

First, we have what Google calls “improved controls” for cutting out unnecessary material at the beginning and end of clips – although in my opinion this isn’t much different from the previous version of the trim tool.

The handles on each end of the clip are slightly larger and thicker, making them easier to hit with your finger. A timestamp also appears as you drag the handles, so overall it’s a bit easier to make changes.

The cropping tool appears automatically whenever you edit your video. You can go back to it by tapping the Video button.

  • Drag the left handle to change where the video starts.
  • Drag the right handle to change the end point of the video.
  • Drag the white bar between the two handles to move around the clip.
  • Press play at any time to check out modern material.
  • To choose Save a copy to confirm your changes and save a separate clip.

Google Photos now has access to a modern auto-enhancement feature that analyzes a clip and then applies its own selection of color enhancements while also stabilizing the video.

  • Obtain Video Then Raise to apply automatic improvements.
  • Tap the play button to see what the updated footage looks like.
  • Obtain Raise again to see the difference with and without the corrections.
  • To choose Save a copy to save the enhanced video as a separate file.

If you prefer to apply video stabilization without color enhancement, just tap Stabilize on Video tool panel instead.

The modern speed booster tool in Google Photos gives you more control over the pacing of your videos, allowing you to speed up and ponderous down the action. The effect can be applied to a specific part of the clip or to the entire clip.

  • Obtain Video and then Speed call the editor.
  • Exploit the bars on the timeline to indicate where the effect starts and ends.
  • Select the playback speed under the timeline: from 1/4 speed to 4x speed.
  • Tap the play button to see what the video looks like now.
  • To choose DoneThen Save a copy Once you’re elated with the results, save a separate video file.

It’s not the most advanced video editing effect you’ll ever see, but considering it only takes a few taps on your phone’s screen, you can get impressive results.

Unlike the tools above, which are exclusive to Android, AI-powered video presets are available in Google Photos on both Android and iOS. Or at least they will eventually – although they were announced in September, as of this writing, I have yet to see presets in Google Photos apps on any platform.

When they appear, Initial settings button will appear in between Video AND Crop in the options at the bottom of the interface. Select this option and you’ll see a selection of changes you can apply with one tap: Basic cut, Ponderous pace, BuzzAND Path. These will be applied at the discretion of Google Photos AI based on the video content.

The example provided by Google is a skateboarding video whose action is restricted to a key jump, which is also slowed down. For a better effect, color enhancements are used at the same time. As before, you can preview the changes and then tap Save a copy to accept the changes and save the modern video file, leaving the original untouched.
