HIMSSCast: A professional examines the state of the stock market in the healthcare IT industry

Share

Many people watch the stock market fairly regularly, but sometimes it takes a professional to make sense of what can be a very confusing or volatile landscape. Fortunately, there are professionals who specialize in the health IT market.

Shahab Vagefi is a Managing Director of the Healthcare practice of Thomas H. Lee Partners, which specializes in healthcare information technology. He is this week’s guest on HIMSSCast.

Vagefi shares his views on why there aren’t as many healthcare IT stocks as there once were. He discusses private healthcare IT companies and whether HIT is more of a private industry.

Are companies more concerned about digital health than electronic health records?

He also discusses how HITECH played a key role in the development of health informatics and electronic health records 15 years ago, but wonders whether today it’s not more about digital healthcare than electronic health records.

Discussion topics:

  • What does he think about the fact that there aren’t as many healthcare IT stocks as there used to be? For example, MDRX, ATHN, and CERN are all history.
  • Epic, of course, has always been private. So has eClinicalWorks and Meditech. Those are three huge electronic health records companies. Is there something about health IT that makes companies private?
  • Are companies more concerned about digital health than electronic health records?
  • Hospital IT was huge 15 years ago around HITECH, of course. What is the market looking at now?
