Here’s how long you should walk each day to prevent back pain

If back pain can be effectively prevented, it will not only improve quality of life, but will also directly lead to reduced health care costs for society as a whole. According to the research team, back pain is one of the most common health problems in Norway, with 60 to 80 percent of people experiencing it in their lifetime. In fact, they say, back and neck pain have the highest medical costs and place a huge burden on the healthcare system.

“Our findings show how important it is to find time for physical activity to prevent not only chronic back pain, but also many other diseases, which in the long run will translate into huge savings for society,” says NTNU professor Paul Jarle-Mörck.

Preventing back pain with petite measures in everyday life

The causes of chronic low back pain are elaborate. It is thought to develop due to a combination of factors, including aging, indigent posture, muscle weakness and mental stress. Conventional treatments focus on medications and physical therapy, making it arduous to reliably prevent relapse. The effectiveness of walking, a uncomplicated and budget-friendly method, has now been demonstrated, which may initiate a fundamental change in treatment.

The benefits of walking are not constrained to lower back pain. Walking has many positive effects, including improving cardiorespiratory function, maintaining bone density, weight management, and improving mental health. This study confirms the comprehensive health benefits of walking, not constrained to the single symptom of low back pain.

Diminutive daily changes, such as walking more often on your way to work or shopping, or using the stairs instead of the elevator, can lend a hand prevent back pain. Even for those who already suffer from back pain, these can be effective ways to reduce the risk of a recurrence.

Put on your shoes, go outside and walk. This could be the first step towards a back pain-free future.
