On Wednesday, developers will get their first taste of Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT integration with the newly released iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates. The integration comes alongside other Apple Intelligence features, including Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and Image Wand.
The general public will get first access to Apple Intelligence features like integrated writing tools, image cleanup, article summaries and the ability to type in a redesigned Siri experience courtesy of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and 15.1. However, they will have to wait for future updates to enable access to the OpenAI platform.
Users will need to individually opt-in to both Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT, either during the setup process or later in settings. They do not need to have a ChatGPT account or a standalone application. However, without a premium account, the number of queries they will be able to access will be narrow, although everyone will have access to all OpenAI models, including GPT-4.
The service will have two primary functions: replenishing Siri’s knowledge base and generating text as part of writing tools. Once the service is enabled, certain questions will cause the novel Siri to ask the user to approve access to ChatGPT. Regulations and trip planning are examples of questions that may come up as options. Users can also directly ask Siri to “Query ChatGPT”.
Compose is another core ChatGPT feature available through Apple Intelligence. Users can access it in any app that supports the novel Writing Tools feature. Compose adds the ability to write content based on suggestions. This combines existing writing tools such as Style and Summary.
This feature also provides access to Open AI image generation. This joins Apple’s novel Image Playground feature, which allows users to generate guided images in two styles. Genmoji does the same for emojis in the Messages app.
