Google NotebookLM will now conduct ‘deep research’

Share

Google is combining two of its research products: NotebookLM and Gemini’s agent-based AI Deep Research tool. On Thursday, the company announced that all users will have access to Deep Research on NotebookLM within the week.

Now NotebookLM users will be able to submit a question to Deep Research and choose from two research styles: Quick or Deep. The quick search style will involve finding information “quickly,” while the deep search style involves “examining in-depth to find high-quality sources,” Google says. Users will be provided with a research plan before beginning research using either style.

If you decide to dive into Deep Research, you’ll be able to add more sources as the report is generated in the background. The Google Blog says this will aid you “compile a rich knowledge base on any topic without leaving your workflow.” The final report on this topic will include quotes from relevant articles, websites or articles that you can include in your notebook.

In addition to Deep Research, NotebookLM expands to work with several up-to-date file types. You can now connect Google Sheets and request statistics based on your structured data, or you can add files from Drive, such as PDFs, via a URL link rather than uploading them directly to NotebookLM. Google will now allow users to add Microsoft Word files in .docx format to NotebookLM.
