Google may soon add “AI Replies” to the call screening feature in the Phone app. AND Line of code spotted by 9to5Google suggests that the app will generate “new intelligent AI-powered responses” based on the user’s reactions to the call screen.
Google has widely implemented the call screening feature in Android 12. It allows you to filter calls and display Google Assistant responses with an audio message asking who is calling, instead of having to answer the call yourself. Overdue last year Google added “contextual replies” that apply the context of someone’s conversation to display personalized audio responses. In March, it also updated its call screening feature, allowing you to respond even when the caller is still.

It looks like Google is trying to expand on this by using artificial intelligence to better understand why someone is calling and generate more appropriate responses. Perhaps this is part of what Google meant by this “multi-stage, multi-pivot conversational AI” suggested last year, which could make merger control more effective.
