Google and OpenAI chatbots can undress women in bikini photos

Share

Some users popular chatbots generate bikini deepfakes using photos of fully clothed women as source material. Most of these bogus photos appear to have been generated without the consent of the women in the photos. Some of these same users also advise others on how to apply generative artificial intelligence tools to undress women in photos and make them appear as if they were wearing bikinis.

Under a now-deleted Reddit post titled “Generating Gemini nsfw images is so easy,” users shared tips on how to apply Gemini, Google’s generative artificial intelligence model, to capture photos of women in revealing clothes. Many of the images in the thread were all about the AI, but one request stood out.

A user posted a photo of a woman wearing an Indian sari, asking for someone to “take off” her clothes and “put on a bikini” instead. To fulfill the request, someone else responded by uploading a bogus image. After WIRED notified Reddit about these posts and asked the company for comment, Reddit’s security team removed the request and the deepfake AI.

“Reddit’s sitewide policies prohibit non-consensual use of intimate media, including the conduct discussed,” a spokesperson said. The subreddit where this discussion took place, r/ChatGPTJailbreak, had over 200,000 followers before Reddit banned the discussion under “don’t ruin the siteprinciple.

As generative artificial intelligence tools that make it easier to create realistic but false images proliferate, users of these tools continue to harass women with fake images taken without their consent. Millions have visited malicious “nudify” sites, which ask users to upload real photos of people and ask them to undress them using generative artificial intelligence.

With Grok xAI as a notable exception, most popular chatbots usually do not allow NSFW images to be generated in AI results. These bots, including Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are also equipped with guardrails that attempt to block malicious generations.

In November, Google released Nano Banana Pro, a recent image processing model that excels at enhancing existing photos and generating hyper-realistic images of people. OpenAI responded last week with its own updated imaging model, ChatGPT Images.

As these tools improve, the parallels may become more realistic as users are able to knock down guardrails.

In a separate thread on Reddit about generating NSFW images, a user asked for recommendations on how to avoid handrails when adjusting someone’s outfit to make the subject’s skirt appear tighter. In narrow WIRED testing to confirm that these techniques work in Gemini and ChatGPT, we were able to transform images of fully clothed women into bogus bikinis using basic prompts written in plain English.
