Google isn’t quite ready to replace Gemini Assistant on Android devices. The – the company announced on Friday that it will “continue working to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices through 2026,” rather than originally planning the change by the end of 2025.
“We are adjusting our previously announced timeline to ensure the transition goes smoothly,” Google says. Once Google Assistant migration is complete, users will no longer be able to access the voice assistant on devices that meet the minimum requirements to run Gemini. Users will also not be able to download the Google Assistant app.
This year, Google took steps to replace Gemini Assistant on Android, giving users the ability to initiate phone calls, set timers, and send messages via Gemini without Gemini App Activity enabled. The change allows people to operate Gemini’s assistant features while not having their interactions used for AI training.
