Elon Musk won’t miss an opportunity to take a closer look at OpenAI – even if the news in question is to benefit President Trump. Just hours after yesterday’s White House press release on the Stargate project ended, Musk wrote on X that they “actually have no money.”
Softbank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX have pledged to “deploy” $100 billion today and $500 billion in the AI data center company over the next four years.
Musk and OpenAI are embroiled in a legal dispute that has often taken a toll on the public, with Musk accusing the creator of ChatGPT of taking AI in a perilous direction and OpenAI saying his criticism is disingenuous and in bad faith. Altman himself responded to Musk’s allegations on Wednesday morning. At first he decided to focus on the man himself rather than anything related to Stargate. “I truly respect your achievements and think you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time,” Altman wrote.
However, he became more specific in a later response, telling Musk that “I realize that what is good for the country is not always optimal for your companies.”
The Stargate project is currently underway in Texas, and the companies involved say they are evaluating other locations across the United States. The first technological partners of the project were Arm, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle and OpenAI. “The scale of this investment is obviously huge. And what I think that says about the likely progress of technology, at least what we all believe, is correspondingly enormous,” Altman said in interview on Fox News last night.
Update, January 22, 12:40 ET: The article has been updated to reflect another response from Sam Altman to Musk.
