When I visited The Liberland Free Republic in April 2023. On the eighth anniversary, there was little to indicate that a compact protagonal-who was not eternal residents, barely any buildings and tendencies to flood-were on their way to achieving the goal of “the most free country on the planet”. But nowadays Liberland has friends in high places.
Liberland was founded in 2015 by Vít Jedlička, a Euro-Scept politician from Czechi, who came to perceive European democracies as destroyed by strict regulations and terrifying. In search of a place for again, Jedlička came across a sporadic plot that seemed to be in any country – a Land noor no earth.
Border misunderstanding between Serbia and Croatia – the transfer of Yugoslavia in the 1990s – created the pockets of the earth west of the Danube, which no nation claims. Jedlička planted the flag on the largest plot.
Since then, the Croatian government has repeatedly blocked attempts to resolve the territory, which it treats as the disputed land. Jedlička, who is the president of Liberland, was arrested by the Croatian border police many times. During my visit to 2023, I participated in a police pursuit in tardy motion during sailing in the Danube towards the territory; Croats officers told our boat on almost a two -hour journey from Serbia, and patrols waited to capture anyone who could try to make a landing.
