Application developers who want to run their programs on ChatGPT can now submit them for review and potential publication, OpenAI said on Wednesday. The company also introduced a modern app catalog in the Chat tools menu, which was quickly dubbed the “app store.”
In October, the company announced the app’s arrival on its chatbot, explaining that the move would provide ChatGPT users with a broader set of capabilities. Major platforms – including Expedia, Spotify, Zillow and Canva – have announced integrations that will allow users to access their services directly from chat conversations. Now the company is opening the field to a wider group of players.
“The apps extend ChatGPT conversations by introducing new context and enabling users to do things like order groceries, turn an outline into a slide presentation, or search for an apartment,” the company said Wednesday.
The OpenAI Application SDK, which is still in beta, currently provides a set of tools for developers looking to create modern experiences for ChatGPT users. Once developers are ready, they can upload their apps to the company’s apps OpenAI development platformwhere they can track the approval status, the company said. He added that many approved apps will start rolling out on Google Chat in the coming year.
This is a large step for OpenAI to expand the app ecosystem within Chat while giving users more reasons to apply and stay with the app.
