ChatGPT is launching pilot group chats in Japan, Fresh Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan

OpenAI enabled Thursday introduced group chat feature for ChatGPT. This feature, currently being tested in select regions including Japan, Fresh Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, allows users to collaborate directly within the app.

Group chat is available to Free, Plus and Team users on mobile and web platforms. OpenAI says the pilot aims to explore how people operate group chats in ChatGPT.

The announcement comes later previous reports that OpenAI was testing a direct messaging style tool.

ChatGPT’s creator describes this pilot as a “small first step” toward creating a more “collaborative experience” within the app. Early adopters will be asked to provide feedback, which the company says will facilitate determine how it ultimately expands to more regions and offerings.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s private chats and personal storage remain completely private. Group chats are invitation-only and members can leave at any time. Most participants can remove others, although the group creator can only leave the group voluntarily. For users under 18, content is filtered using additional security measures and parental controls.

Starting a group chat is effortless. Just tap the people icon and add participants directly or by sharing a link. Groups can consist of 1 to 20 people. If you add someone to an existing chat, a novel group will be created, leaving the original conversation unchanged. Each group has a brief profile, and all chats are organized in a sidebar with labels for effortless access.

Group chats work the same as regular ChatGPT conversations, but with multiple people participating. GPT-5.1 Auto supports replies and comes with many features such as search, image generation, file transfer and dictation. In group chats, ChatGPT usage limits – which limit the number of AI replies users can receive in an hour – only count when ChatGPT responds. Messages between participants do not count towards these limits.

ChatGPT learned novel social skills in group chats, knowing when to chime in and when to stay hushed. You can tag “ChatGPT” to get a response. He can also react with emojis and operate profile photos to create personalized conversation images.

The group chat feature is the latest step in OpenAI’s gradual transformation from a straightforward AI assistant to something resembling a social platform. In overdue September, the company launched Sora 2, a standalone social media app with a TikTok-style feed for sharing AI-generated videos, along with algorithmic recommendations based on user activity and location, parental controls and direct messaging capabilities.
