ChatGPT can now create interactive visualizations to facilitate you understand math and science concepts

Share

OpenAI on Tuesday introduced lively visual explanations, a novel ChatGPT feature that allows users to see how formulas, variables and mathematical relationships change in real time.

Instead of simply reading explanations or looking at a unchanging diagram, users can now directly interact with interactive visualizations. For example, by examining the Pythagorean theorem, you can adjust the lengths of the sides of a triangle and immediately see the hypotenuse update. Users can adjust numbers and variables and see changes immediately.

To try this feature, ask ChatGPT questions such as “What is the lens equation?” or “How do I find the area of a circle?” ChatGPT will respond not only with explanations, but also with an interactive module that you can manipulate.

Currently, these visualizations are available for over 70 math and science topics, including the binomial square, Charles’ law, area of a circle, compound interest, Coulomb’s law, difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, kinetic energy, linear equations, and Ohm’s law.

OpenAI plans to expand this feature later to include more interactive topics. It is available to all logged in ChatGPT users.

The introduction of lively visual explanations is noteworthy because it changes the role of the tool slightly – instead of just providing answers, it asks users to engage directly with the underlying concepts. Whether this translates into deeper understanding will likely depend on how it is used.

As artificial intelligence continues to change the way people approach learning, it has sparked heated debates in the education community. While some educators are concerned about over-reliance on AI, many teachers and students are already using these tools and incorporating them into their daily routines. According to OpenAI, more than 140 million people utilize ChatGPT every week to get facilitate with math and science, subjects that have traditionally been challenging for students.

Other major AI companies are also exploring similar interactive features. in November Google’s twins launched its own interactive diagrams and visualizations.

This novel feature joins ChatGPT’s other latest learning tools, such as a learning mode that guides users through problems step-by-step. There is also QuizGPT where users can create flashcards and ask ChatGPT to quiz them on any topic before their exams.
