Marc Raibert, founder and chairman Boston dynamicsHe gave the world a menagerie with two- and four-legged machines capable of stunning Parkourcontagious Dance proceduresand hardworking Laying shelves.

Raibert now wants to conduct a revolution in robot intelligence, as well as acrobatics. And he says that the last progress in machine learning has accelerated the ability of their robots to learn to perform challenging movements without human assist. “We hope that we will be able to create a lot of behaviors without having to manually do everything they do,” Raibert recently told me.

Boston Dynamics may have been a pioneer of leg robots, but is now part of a crowded package of companies offering dogs and humanoids. It wasn’t until this week that the startup called Figura showed A new humanoid called Helix, which apparently can discharge foodstuffs. Another company, X1, showed a muscular -looking humanoid called Neo Gamma Doing duties at home. Third, Apptronik, said he was planning scale His humanoid, called Apollo. However, demos can be misleading. In addition, few companies reveal how much their humanoids cost, and it is not clear how many of them really expect to sell them as domestic helpers.

The real test for these robots will be how much they can do regardless of human programming and direct control. And it will depend on the progress such as these Raibert. In November last year I wrote about efforts to create completely recent models to control robots. If this work begins to bring fruit, we can see humanoids and developing four times faster.

Boston Dynamics sells four -legged robot called Place This is used on oil platforms, construction sites and other places where the wheels are fighting with the area. The company also creates a humanoid called Atlas for research. Raibert claims that Boston Dynamics has used the technique of artificial intelligence called learning to enhance himself to improve the ability to run to running, so that it moves three times faster. Raibert says that the same method helps Atlas walk more confidently.
