The iPhone 16 series has 8GB of RAM, from the base model to the 16 Pro Max, and that’s all thanks to Apple Intelligence. Apple’s vice president of hardware technologies Johny Srouji confirmed this in interview with Geekerwanpublished yesterday that 9to5Mac spotted.
Srouji explained in the interview that “DRAM is one aspect” when deciding on the hardware parameters needed for Apple Intelligence, saying that this feature “led us to the belief that we needed 8GB.” He added that the additional RAM would also “help a lot” with tasks like high-end gaming on the devices.
Apple hasn’t previously announced how much RAM the iPhone 16 line has, but MacPlots discovered references to the 8GB figure in Xcode after the phones were announced. Apple, which is not the only hardware maker to recently boost RAM to offer AI, said iOS 18 will not bring Apple Intelligence to the iPhone 15, which has only 6GB of RAM when the feature set launches. Aside from the iPhone 16 line, the iPhone 15 Pro will be the only other phone to support it.
Additionally, Srouji spent the roughly 17-minute interview discussing the company’s philosophy on hardware performance, the characteristics of the A18 processors in the up-to-date phones, Apple’s approach to thermal design, and video and image processing in the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro.
