Anthropic has released a novel open-source tool that allows you to directly connect AI assistants with the information they need to answer or complete tasks. New model context protocol (MCP) provides a universal connection to all types of data sources, which Anthropic says will improve performance.
Earlier this month, OpenAI began testing a novel “Work with Apps” feature that allows the Mac version of ChatGPT to directly connect to specific coding applications. On the other hand, Anthropic aims to work across all AI systems and data sources.
As Alex Albert pointed outHead of Relationships Claude at Anthropic, developers now have to create custom code for each dataset from which they want to draw their AI model. Albert says that with Anthropic’s MCP solution, developers can integrate it with their AI tool once and then “connect to data sources anywhere” through a “standard protocol for sharing resources, tools and prompts.”
Anthropic says coding software such as Replit, Codeium and Souregraph have already started using MCP to create AI agents that can perform tasks on behalf of users. This tool will likely make it easier for other companies and developers to connect their AI system to multiple data sources – which could prove particularly useful as the industry begins to move towards agent-based AI.
“Instead of maintaining separate connectors for each data source, developers can now build on a standard protocol,” Anthropic’s announcement reads. “As the ecosystem matures, AI systems will maintain context as they move between different tools and datasets, replacing today’s fragmented integrations with a more balanced architecture.”
