OpenAI will soon enable “erotica” for ChatGPT users who verify their age on the platform. IN post X on On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will add adult chat support once age gating launches in December.

“As we more fully implement age controls and as part of our ‘treat adult users as adults’ policy, we will make even more available, such as erotica for verified adults,” writes Altman. Earlier this month, OpenAI suggested allowing developers to create “mature” ChatGPT applications after implementing “appropriate age verification and controls.”

Along with the addition of “erotica,” OpenAI also plans to launch a up-to-date version of ChatGPT that “behaves more like what people liked around 4o.” Just a day after GPT-5 became the default ChatGPT-enabled model, OpenAI brought back GPT-4o as an option after people complained that the up-to-date model was less handsome.

Altman said OpenAI made ChatGPT “quite restrictive so that we can make sure we’re being cautious about mental health issues,” adding that the company realized the change made the chatbot “less useful/enjoyable for many users who didn’t have mental health issues.” OpenAI has since launched tools to “better detect” when a user is in a mental distress situation.

OpenAI also announced the creation of a “wellbeing and artificial intelligence” council to lend a hand shape OpenAI’s response to “complex or sensitive” scenarios. The council is made up of a team of eight researchers and experts examining the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on mental health. But, How Ars Technica emphasizesdoes not include any suicide prevention experts, many of whom have recently called OpenAI will introduce additional protections for users with suicidal thoughts

“Now that we have alleviated serious mental health issues and have new tools, we will be able to safely ease restrictions in most cases,” Altman writes in his X post.
