AlphaQubit tackles one of the biggest challenges in quantum computing

Share

Quantum computers could revolutionize drug discovery, materials design and fundamental physics – if we can make them work reliably.

Some problems that would take a conventional computer billions of years to solve would take a quantum computer just a few hours to solve. However, these novel processors are more susceptible to noise than conventional ones. If we want to boost the reliability of quantum computers, especially at gigantic scale, we need to carefully identify and correct these errors.

In paper published today in NatureIntroducing AlphaQubit, an AI-powered decoder that identifies quantum computing errors with state-of-the-art accuracy. This collaborative work combined Google DeepMind’s machine learning expertise and Google Quantum AI’s error correction expertise to accelerate progress in building a reliable quantum computer.

Accurately identifying errors is a key step toward making quantum computers capable of performing long, large-scale calculations, opening the door to scientific breakthroughs and many novel areas of discovery.
