Spotify is getting support for Google Gemini extensions, which will allow users to search and play music using a generative AI assistant with natural language requests. The extension was first spotted in Google app code in June and is currently rolling out to compatible Android devices, according to the website 9to5Google.
Gemini can play music by song title, artist name, album name, playlist name, or for a specific activity, but does not currently create playlists or radio stations on Spotify. Please note that if you are already connected to another music service, e.g. YouTube Music, as part of your initial request you will need to verbally tell (or type) which service you would like to utilize Gemini and then the default setting will be whatever you last used .
Spotify is the second non-Google app to gain Gemini capabilities after the launch of WhatsApp support that began in October.
Google support page for the extension explains that it first requires connecting your Spotify and Google accounts to enable the utilize of the Gemini app, as well as enabling the Gemini Apps Activity feature, which can store AI queries for up to 72 hours. You won’t be able to utilize the Spotify extension in Google News, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini iOS app. The extension will only work if the Gemini language is set to English.
