OpenAI extends ChatGPT’s advanced voice functionality to the web, allowing users to communicate with the AI chatbot directly from their browser. The company’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, announced start on the X platform.
The feature that makes chatting with ChatGPT more natural is rolling out to paying ChatGPT customers this week, which means you’ll need to be a Plus, Enterprise, Teams or Edu subscriber to access it.
The web launch follows the September debut of OpenAI’s advanced voice mode in the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps.
Advanced voice mode uses OpenAI GPT-4onative audio capabilities enabling natural, real-time conversations between users and ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to understand and respond to non-verbal signals, including speaking speed. The chatbot can also respond with emotions.
To start a voice chat on the Internet, you need to select the Voice icon in the lower right corner of the ChatGPT prompt. You will then need to allow your browser to access your computer’s microphone. Once you start the voice call, you will be taken to a screen with a blue ball in the middle.
You can choose from nine starting voices for ChatGPT, each of which has its own tone and character. For example, you can choose “Arbor”, which is “laid back and versatile”, or you can choose “Ember”, which is “confident and optimistic”.
Weil says OpenAI will look to make this feature available for free to users in the “coming weeks.”
Plus and Team subscription users are subject to a daily limit when using Advanced Voice Mode. According to A help page Daily limits may change in this feature. OpenAI will notify you when you have 15 minutes of Advanced Voice left for the day. Free users will get access to a monthly preview to try out the feature.
