Lauren Goode: Zoë, you ate vegan pizza last night. You said it was pretty good.
Zoë Schiffer: I did. So I did and read a truly terrifying article written by Annie Lowrey in The Atlantic about dairy farming and it radicalized me for at least 24 hours. I was on oat milk. Thank you. I don’t want a reward.
Lauren Goode: Mike, how long have you been vegan?
Michael Calore: I don’t know. 800 years.
Lauren Goode: Pretty. Our long-time resident in this program.
Michael Calore: I have been fully vegan for about five years and vegetarian since I was a teenager. But look, sticking to a lifelong plant-based lifestyle, I know it doesn’t work for everyone. It was more of a joke. What I’m actually going to recommend to all of our listeners is my favorite TV show about immortality. It’s called True Blood. It’s an HBO show about Southern vampires.
Zoë Schiffer: This is a documentary about the original bloodthirsty boys.
Michael Calore: This is fantastic.
Lauren Goode: True story. True story. No, this is a script.
Michael Calore: It’s campy, which is the best thing about it, because most of the time it takes itself seriously and then doesn’t. It is full of sex, violence and humor. It’s great fun. Fantastic performances from all the main actors, and there are a dozen or so people in the show who are really great. I highly recommend going back and watching it True Blood. This was originally on TV, what, 15 years ago? Something like that. It feels like a lifetime ago.
Lauren Goode: You know, what I love most about this recommendation is that it allows me to bring one of my favorite phrases from our last podcast, Gadget Lab, to this podcast, which is “Love a good Skarsgård.”
Michael Calore: “I love a good Skarsgård.”
Lauren Goode: Longtime listeners will appreciate.
Michael Calore: This is the high and handsome Alexander Skarsgård.
Lauren Goode: As a vampire. As a sexy vampire.
Michael Calore: As a vampire named Eric. Yes. That’s what I got.
Lauren Goode: Thanks for breaking the mold, Mike.
Michael Calore: You’re welcome. All right, this is our program today. Next week we’ll be back with an episode exploring Silicon Valley’s long relationship with libertarianism.
