OpenAI makes ChatGPT cheaper for schools and nonprofits

OpenAI says ChatGPT Edu will enable universities to “responsibly deploy AI among students, faculty, researchers and campus staff.” It is built on the faster GPT-4o model, which offers improved multimodal capabilities for text, video and audio.

For example, OpenAI says universities can operate the tool to review student resumes, write grant applications, and facilitate professors with grading. ChatGPT for Edu offers “enterprise-grade” security and does not operate data to train OpenAI models. It is offered at an “affordable” price for universities.

Additionally, OpenAI has introduced OpenAI for Nonprofits, which gives nonprofits access to the ChatGPT team at a lower rate of $20 per month per user. Non-profit organizations can apply for a discount on the OpenAI website. Larger organizations that need greater capabilities and security can also do so contact OpenAI to get ChatGPT Enterprise with a 50 percent discount.

Meanwhile, former OpenAI board member Helen Toner, who helped persuade Altman to fire Altman last year, spoke out about the CEO during an interview with AI TED show podcast. Toner cited “multiple instances” in which Altman provided misleading information about the company’s security processes and evidence that the board said showed Altman “lied and manipulated in various situations.”
