Humane recalls AI Pin charging case due to overheating concerns

After warning customers to stop using it, Humane is formally recalling approximately 10,500 units of its charging case for the troubled AI Pin. The affected cases were sold from November last year to May this year. According to CPSC recall pagethe lithium polymer battery in the charging accessory could potentially overheat and create a fire hazard. Humane admitted to similar arrangements in a June email to customers.

Fortunately, this worst-case scenario has not yet come true; the recall noted “one report of cargo overheating and melting while charging,” but no injuries or property damage were reported. The AI Pin, Magnetic Battery Booster and Humane Charging Pad are not affected by the issue, the company said in an earlier email.

Still, the situation adds another flaw to Humane’s first product, which got off to a disastrous start after a wave of damning reviews, leisurely sales and numerous recalls. The 10,500 figure is another sign of leisurely AI Pin sales. In an attempt to reverse its fortunes, the company recently reduced the price of the device. (The cheaper model no longer includes a charging case.) Humane also continues to release software improvements for the wearable gadget. “CosmOS 1.2 is our biggest software update since launch,” the company says published in October this month.

Customers have the option to request a full refund or receive a replacement fee. If you opt for a refund, those who purchased it on their own will receive $149, and anyone who received the charge case as part of the AI Pin “complete package” will receive $129. According to the CPSC, a revised and more secure version of Humane’s fares will be available in three to six months.

The bigger question is what might happen to the company itself by that date. Will Humane be able to find a buyer? Will he be able to put CosmOS in other products?
