According to Meta, it is working on an AI-powered search engine to reduce its dependence on Google and Microsoft report from Information. The search engine would reportedly provide AI-generated summaries of current events within the Meta AI chatbot.

The Meta AI bot built into Instagram and Facebook currently uses Google – whose parent company, Alphabet, will release its quarterly earnings report tomorrow – and Microsoft Bing to answer questions about the latest news and events.

This may eventually change, because e.g The Meta web crawler has been spotted wandering the web months ago. Information the source indicates that the team worked for about eight months to build a database of information for the chatbot. Meta has been working on collecting location data that could rival Google Maps, and last month Bloomberg reported that Apple’s work on App Store search tools showed it “has what it takes” for its own AI-powered replacement for Google’s search engine.

Last week, Meta also announced that it had entered into a multi-year deal Reutersenabling the chatbot to operate press articles in responses. Edge reached out to Meta for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
