OpenAI’s GPT store has left some developers in the lurch

Share

OpenAI was first announced ability to create custom GPTs almost a year ago. The company described GPT as an automated, low-code way to create specialized solutions on top of ChatGPT and said it believes impressive GPTs will be created by non-traditional developers such as teachers, trainers and DIY enthusiasts.

The store will be available to customers and creators who have paid for ChatGPT Plus, Teams or Enterprise. OpenAI also stated that it would launch a revenue program for GPT developers and that US builders would be paid based on user engagement with their GPT. She promised to provide detailed information on payment criteria.

The GPT Store officially launched in January 2024 by developer Nick Dobos in slow March shared on X a screenshot of an email he claims he received from OpenAI inviting him to participate in a revenue-sharing pilot program. Grimoire, a GPT encoder from Dobos, is one of the most popular GPTs in the GPT store, with over 2 million “conversations” or chats taking place using the app.

An email Dobos shared with X shows that the pilot program guaranteed him a minimum payment of $1,000 per month, with the possibility of additional earnings depending on usage. Dobos did not respond to several emails and direct messages asking about his experience with the GPT store since the pilot program launched.

When asked about the program’s status, OpenAI pointed WIRED to its help pagewhich presented a miniature, detailed description of the program and wrote that the company “hope[s] to enable more builders to monetize their GPT in the future.”

Like Villocido, Adrian Lin, who lives in Singapore, was optimistic about the GPT store. Lin is a full-time artificial intelligence researcher who founded the Adrian AI Lab on the side. He has no formal training in web or mobile app development, so when OpenAI found that creating GPT didn’t require coding skills, Lin saw it as an opportunity to build and manage his own products.

Lin says refining the models based on his intentions was easy.

Lin estimates that Copywriter GPT, his GPT who prepares advertising copy, had between 500,000 and 600,000 interactions. Like Villocido’s Books GPT, Lin’s has appeared on the OpenAI store home page.
