What is a photo? No, really. What is there a photo? What Is photo? What is it? AND photo? What is this photo? When you tap the shutter button on your phone and it grabs almost a dozen frames from the cache that was capturing data long before you pressed anything, and then combines the “best” parts of each of them before you can edit everything about all of them, or while you’re at it Are you taking a photo of the process? In a world where artificial intelligence is good enough to make everything look good, does it even matter? When you ask this question enough times, it becomes the size of the universe – and we’ve certainly asked this question enough times to achieve that.

ON this episode Vergecastlet’s dive into this question again from two different angles. First, we talk to Ben Sandofsky and Sebastiaan De With, co-creators of the popular camera app Halogen. We talk about their perceptions of the iPhone camera, how people’s operate of cameras has changed over the years, and why Halide’s modern Process Zero mode, which removes all iPhone processing in favor of capturing one frame at a time with no changes , turned out to be so effective. was very popular among users.

after that EdgeAllison Johnson joins the show to tell us about an experiment she’s doing on herself. After reviewing this year’s lineup of AI-powered phones, she decided to go all-in on AI and let Google, Apple, and Samsung take care of taking and editing photos for her. We talk about how this approach changed the photos she took, the way she took them, and what she thinks about them now.

At last, EdgeVictoria Song from Victoria Song helps us answer the question from Vergecast Hotline (866-VERGE11 or vergecast@theverge.com) to find out whether a pair of Pixel Buds or a set of Ray-Ban Meta sharp glasses are a better option for audio on the go. We have some opinions. And a few other options.
