OpenAI X Official Account Hacked to Spread Cryptocurrency Scam

On Monday evening, OpenAI’s official account on the X platform was compromised in an attempt to conduct a cryptocurrency scam.

On Monday at 6:24 PM ET, the @OpenAINewsroom account, which shares OpenAI news and has nearly 54,000 followers, posted a (now deleted) post advertising the “$OPENAI” token.

“We are excited to announce $OPEANAI: a token that combines AI and blockchain technology,” the post reads. “All OpenAI users can apply for a share of the initial supply of $OPENAI. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.” The post also included a link to a spoofed version of the OpenAI website at a URL that was not open.

When I visited the site, there was a section to claim $OPENAI cryptocurrency. When I clicked the button, it asked me to connect a wallet, which I did not do.

OpenAI and X did not immediately respond to requests for comment. As of this writing, the OpenAI Newsroom account has not posted anything that would explain what may have happened. The account has been live at the beginning of this month.
