YouTube is developing novel tools to give creators on the platform more control over content that replicates their voice or likeness, using generative artificial intelligence. In his adYouTube said the novel similarity management technology will support protect creators and partners while also enabling them to “harness the creative potential of AI” by promoting responsible AI development.

The first tool, described as “synthetic singing identification technology,” will allow artists and creators to automatically detect and manage YouTube content that simulates their singing voices using generative AI. YouTube says the tool is part of its existing Content ID Copyright Identification System and that it plans to test the solution in a pilot program next year.

The announcement follows YouTube’s November promise that music labels would be able to remove AI-powered clones of musicians. The rapid development and availability of AI-powered generative music tools has raised concerns among artists about their operate in plagiarism, copying, and copyright infringement. In an open letter from earlier this yearMore than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, and Katy Perry, have called unauthorized AI-generated mimicry an “assault on human creativity” and demanded greater accountability for its development to protect artists’ livelihoods.

A separate tool that can identify deepfakes of creators, actors, musicians, and athletes on the platform is also in the works. The system is still in dynamic development, and YouTube has not indicated when it can be expected to be implemented.

YouTube is also committed to prosecuting anyone who uses its platform to create AI tools. “We’ve made it clear that accessing creator content in an unauthorized way violates our Terms of Service,” the platform said — which hasn’t stopped companies like OpenAI, Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, Salesforce, and Runway AI from training their AI systems on thousands of scraped YouTube videos. Protections against this activity include blocking YouTube access to scrapers and investing in scraping detection systems.

“As AI evolves, we believe it should amplify human creativity, not replace it,” YouTube said in its announcement. “We are committed to working with our partners to ensure future advancements amplify their voices, and we will continue to advance safeguards to address concerns and achieve our shared goals.”

YouTube also said it is working on ways to give creators more choice over how third-party AI companies can operate their content on the platform. More details will be shared later this year.
