Northwestern Medicine Integrates DAX Copilot with Epic to Drive Workflow Efficiency

Share

Northwestern Medicine announced last week that it has integrated Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience Copilot solution into its Epic electronic health record and is rolling out the ambient voice tool across the enterprise.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
DAX Copilot, implemented through Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, is designed to lend a hand Northwestern Medicine physicians document patient conversations while reducing their clinical documentation burden.

“We are already seeing significant benefits from the DAX Copilot system as it significantly enhances our ability to provide exceptional patient care by reducing the administrative burden on our physicians,” Doug King, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare’s chief information officer, said in a statement.

After some time of implementation, we plan to see further improvements in clinical and operational efficiency and extend the time of patient care.

Nuance reports that Northwestern Medicine physicians who have used the tool in at least half of their visits are seeing more than 11 additional patients per month compared to before implementing DAX Copilot.

In terms of financial benefits, Northwestern’s co-pilot users are already seeing higher levels of service coding, more exact clinical documentation and additional revenue from increased throughput and additional services, the companies say.

Physicians, in turn, admit that they are ecstatic to spend less time in the EHR, including a 17% decrease in time spent on preparing medical records after working hours at home.

BIGGER TREND
Nuance points to research showing that more than half of doctors reported feeling burnt out in 2023. Another study by the KLAS Arch Collaborative shows that doctors at academic medical centers such as Northwestern Medicine, especially under stressgiven their more complicated workflows and burdensome documentation requirements.

IN THE DOCUMENT
“The implementation of DAX Copilot will allow our physicians to spend more time with our patients, focusing on their needs rather than on paperwork and data entry,” said Dr. Gaurava Agarwal, Chief Wellness Officer at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “It will improve the overall patient experience while also increasing the well-being of our physicians, enabling them to provide more effective and satisfying care.”
