The launch of OpenAI’s recent GPT-4o “omni” model in May has led to a surge in revenue for the ChatGPT app. After a gigantic jump after the model’s release, the mobile version of OpenAI’s chatbot has now recorded its biggest month of revenue yet. The app brought in $28 million in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play in July, according to data from the app analytics firm application figures.
It’s worth noting that net revenue is the amount OpenAI keeps after paying fees for Apple and Google in-app purchases. Additionally, the company found that Apple’s App Store accounted for 83% of app revenue — a figure that’s up 20% since June.
Before app store fees, ChatGPT earned $28.9 million in May, $34 million in June, and $39.9 million in July.
With GPT-4o, ChatGPT gained the ability to handle text, speech, and video. It also began offering faster response times, and the chatbot could be interrupted, making interactions with the AI more human and natural, among other things.
Demand for the recent technology drove ChatGPT’s revenue up 40% in May, Appfigures says. And while that growth has slowed somewhat since then, revenue is still growing at a hearty clip.
Appfigures estimates that ChatGPT added 2 million recent paying subscribers in July thanks to app-generated revenue—another recent record for a mobile app.
With the introduction of ChatGPT’s recent Advanced Voice Mode, which enables near real-time, lifelike interactions, Appfigures is anticipating continued growth in the coming months.
