It’s been a few days since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT’s recent advanced voice mode, and the diminutive group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers who have been given the mode are seemingly impressed. Various clips of the feature in action have surfaced online, showing off its ability to sing, imitate accents, correct language pronunciation, and provide narration.
An example of the latter can be seen in the videos below, where User X @nickfloats asks ChatGPT to “tell me a story as if you were an airline pilot telling it to passengers on a plane.” The chatbot jumps into action just a second later, even changing its audio to sound more like an intercom. ChatGPT had trouble adjusting to more sophisticated requests, like overlaying engine sounds, but the voice itself is clear and emotional, and ChatGPT handles user interruptions well.
In conversation uploaded to YouTubeChatGPT claims it can handle input in “dozens of languages,” but the exact number may vary “depending on how dialects and regional variations are counted.” One clip shows the chatbot’s ability to improve your pronunciation of French wordsgiving specific tips on how to adjust intonation. Another language demonstration shows ChatGPT speaks Turkish after fulfilling a detailed request to tell an emotional story. While some Turkish X speakers noted that the accent did not sound native, they managed to fulfill the story request and reacted appropriately, laughing and crying at certain points.
Several different male and female-sounding voices could be heard during the demonstrations, although the voice of “Sky,” reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson, who was removed from the service in May, was not among them.
OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson told anyone who feels left out of these fun shows: Edge This advanced voice mode will be available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) this fall.
