Top hospitals ranked for AI innovation

Share

Everyone in healthcare is talking about AI, and most healthcare organizations are doing something with it, even in pilots or small-scale utilize cases. But some hospitals and health systems are really leading the pack.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
This week CB Insights launched Hospital AI Readiness IndexThe scorecard is billed as a data-driven ranking that tracks leading health systems on how imaginative their AI projects are—and how well they’re implementing them to improve clinical and operational processes and outcomes.

The index uses CB Insights data to evaluate hospitals on two factors: innovation and execution.

For the former, the authors examined what they do to develop or acquire modern AI and automation tools, and whether, for example, they have dedicated AI research departments. For the latter, they looked at AI implementations—where they happen and what real-world successes they enable.

Perhaps not surprisingly, three powerhouse health systems top the list. Mayo Clinic is at the top, according to CB Insights, followed by Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic.

Mayo has been cited, for example, for filing more than 50 patents for AI-enabled tools in cardiology, oncology and other areas, as well as investing in AI startups addressing a range of clinical and surgical utilize cases.

Intermountain and Cleveland Clinic were recognized, respectively, for the former’s homegrown development of an automated clinical decision support system and the latter’s many productive AI-focused business relationships, such as “a partnership with PathAI focused on using pathology algorithms to improve translational research and clinical care.”

Here it is full list out of 25 healthcare systems, according to CB Insights (note the tie for 17th), referencing only some of our coverage of their AI work.

BIGGER TREND
has been providing interviews and in-depth case studies on how cutting-edge health systems are innovating healthcare using artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The final pages of the collection feature articles that show how leading AI organizations are pioneering their AI efforts, as well as success stories where IT investments and innovations are delivering clinical and financial ROI.

Interviewees included Mayo Clinic Platform President Dr. John Halamka, who spoke about the potential of generative AI; Albert Marinez, Chief Analytics Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, who provided advice on democratizing AI innovation and upskilling talent; and Craig Richardville, Chief Digital and Information Officer at Intermountain, who provided guidance on evaluating and selecting vendors.

IN THE DOCUMENT
“We looked at the top private healthcare systems in the U.S. (by number of hospitals) and rated them based on how prepared they are to adapt to the rapidly changing AI environment in two key areas: innovation and execution,” CB Insights researchers said in announcing the modern Hospital AI Readiness Index.

“The Innovation Score measures a health system’s history of developing or acquiring new AI capabilities,” they explained. “This score is based on CB Insights data, including patents, acquisitions, and contracting activity. It also takes into account the presence of an AI research center.”

The Execution Score, meanwhile, “measures a healthcare system’s ability to introduce AI-based products and services into clinical practice, as well as to implement AI internally across business and back-office functions. The score is based on CB Insights data, including business relationships, media mentions of product launches, and earnings transcripts.”
